Broadcaster Danny Baker has found himself at the centre of a Twitter storm following a ‘racist’ tweet he posted shortly after the world got its first glimpse of new royal baby Archie Harrison.

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry introduced the world to their newborn son for the first time on Wednesday – with his name revealed shortly after.

However Baker’s tweet about the royal baby, posted shortly after, was swiftly deleted, with Baker apologising after its connotations were pointed out to him.

So just what did he tweet? Here’s what you need to know…

What did Danny Baker tweet about royal baby Archie?

Baker’s tweet saw him post a black and white photograph of a couple accompanied by a monkey dressed in a suit.

He captioned the snap: ‘Royal baby leaves hospital’ – sharing the snap with his 501,000 followers.

However he swiftly deleted the tweet following the response he received, later apologising for what he had posted.

‘Sorry my gag pic of the little fella in the posh suit has whipped some up. Never occurred to me because, well, mind not diseased.

‘Soon as those good enough to point out its possible connotations got in touch, down it came. And that’s it.

‘Now stand by for sweary football tweets.’

He also insisted that the post was not intended to be ‘racist’, telling another follower: ‘Connection never occurred to me till people were good enough to enlighten.

‘Little fella in posh suit. Anyway, deleted now.’

He later apologised again, saying: ‘Sincere apologies for the stupid unthinking gag pic earlier. Was supposed to be joke about Royals vs circus animals in posh clothes but interpreted by as about monkeys & race, so rightly deleted.’

Baker added: ‘Royal watching not my forte.’

How have people reacted to the tweet?

Despite Baker’s apology, the post has still come in for criticism from fans of the broadcaster.

‘Danny Baker’s Tweet was not a retweet. He needed to search and download the image, put the words on it then post it,’ one person asked. ‘How long during this process weren’t you thinking Danny? #RoyalBaby.’

Another added: ‘Just seen why Danny Baker is trending. Not sure how you could ever explain the thought process of putting up such a crass photo.’

Others have called for the Radio 5 Live host to be axed from the airwaves.

However others have defended Baker, including electronic music and comedy duo Cassetteboy, who said: ‘This #DannyBaker thing is ridiculous. Just because a joke can be INTERPRETED as racist doesn’t mean there was racist INTENT behind it – before going on to explain how they once ‘accidentally did a racist gig’.

The Duchess Of Sussex, who is of mixed-race heritage, has been the target of racist abuse ever since the start of her relationship with Prince Harry.

Kensington Palace previously issued a statement addressing the matter in 2016.

Speaking about the Prince’s relationship, it read: ‘His girlfriend Meghan Markle has been subject to a wave of abuse and harassment.

‘Some of this has been very public – the smear on a front page of a national newspaper; the racial undertones of comment pieces; and the outright sexism and racism of social media trolls and web article comments.’

UPDATE: Danny Baker has now claimed he has been fired from BBC Radio 5 Live.
