Prince Philip defied the ‘immense’ pain of a cracked rib to attend grandson Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s wedding.
The Duke of Edinburgh ‘soldiered on’ after suffering the injury following a fall in the bath days earlier.
He ‘cheerily’ walked unaided into Windsor Castle for the one-hour ceremony and reception, in May 2018.
Buckingham Palace today announced the 99-year-old died peacefully at Windsor Castle this morning.
Determination is just one of the many qualities the Duke will be remembered for.
The grandfather of the groom proudly wore a traditional British stiff upper lip for the nuptials, despite being in agony.
Prince Philip was already recovering from a hip replacement operation weeks before the accident in the bath.
‘The Duke is not a fan of showering and prefers to bathe. But he’s a determined man and nothing was going to stop him attending nor would he take any kind of walking aid,’ a source told the Sun.
But he was adamant to be in good shape for Harry and Meghan’s big day – walking up and down the stairs in a bid to improve his fitness.

He was praised for his ‘completely heroic’ attendance at St George’s chapel to watch the couple tie the knot.
Royal biographer Penny Juror said at the time: ‘Given that he is 96 years old and the operation was just six weeks ago, I think that shows what an extraordinary man he is.’
And the Duke’s presence would have meant a ‘huge amount’ to Harry, Ms Juror said, adding: ‘He is enormously fond of his grandfather.’

Prince Philip was said to be ‘distraught’ after Harry and Meghan’s bombshell interview with Oprah Winfrey.
The Duke was in hospital for an infection when the couple spoke out about life in the Royal Family.
Royal expert Charlie Rae told talkRADIO: ‘Harry is one of the favourite grand-children.
“Harry is very close to Philip and I think he is absolutely distraught that something like this has been allowed to happen.’
