Boris reacts to Harry and Meghan interview despite not seeing it

Boris Johnson has not seen Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s interview with Oprah Winfrey, but Downing Street insisted there is no ‘place in society’ for racism.

During the tell-all interview, Meghan claimed that when she was pregnant with her son Archie, there were concerns and conversations about how dark his skin might be within the family.

Asked whether the allegations against the Royal Family need to be taken seriously, the Prime Minister’s spokesman said: ‘It is a matter for the Palace but the Prime Minister hasn’t seen those interviews.’

The spokesman was pressed to say whether it was acceptable to ask questions about the skin colour of an unborn child.

He replied by saying Mr Johnson has previously said there was ‘no place in society’ for racism, Sky News reports.

In the interview, Oprah asked Meghan about the alleged conversations about her unborn child: ‘Who is having that conversation with you?’

Meghan would not say who raised this, saying: ‘I think that would be damaging to them’.

She added the concerns were relayed to her by Harry, who had been told people were worried about ‘what that would mean or look like’.

Meghan added: ‘That was relayed to me from Harry, those were conversations the family had with him, and I think it was really hard to be able to see those as compartmentalised conversations.’

Asked whether there were concerns her child would be ‘too brown’ and that would be a problem, Meghan said: ‘If that is the assumption you are making, that is a pretty safe one.’

Joining her in the interview later, Prince Harry confirmed what she said, adding he would not reveal who raised the concerns.

He said: ‘That conversation I’m never going to share. At the time it was awkward. That was right at the beginning. “What will the kids look like?”

‘That was right at the beginning when they said we weren’t going to get security. There were signs before we got married that this was going to be really hard.’

During the sensational interview, Meghan also said the pressures of living within the Royal Family drove her to thoughts of suicide.

‘I just didn’t want to be alive anymore,’ she told Oprah, revealing that she went to palace officials with her concerns, but was told she could not go to an outside institution to get treatment because of how it would be perceived.

Meghan suggested she and Harry wanted Archie to be a prince so he would have security and be protected.

‘They didn’t want him to be a prince or princess, not knowing what the gender would be, and he wasn’t going to receive security,’ she said.

Archie, who is seventh in line to the throne, is not entitled to be an HRH or a prince due to rules set out more than 100 years ago by King George V.

He will be entitled to be an HRH or a prince when the Prince of Wales accedes to the throne.

As the first born son of a duke, Archie could have become Earl of Dumbarton or Lord Archie Mountbatten-Windsor when he was born, but a royal source said Harry and Meghan decided he should be a regular Master Archie Mountbatten-Windsor.
