Susanna Reid has hit back at the suggestion she was ‘silently complicit’ as Piers Morgan ranted about Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s interview with Oprah Winfrey.
Good Morning Britain got off to a heated start on Monday as Piers reacted to Meghan and Harry’s explosive interview detailing their reasons for quitting life as working members of the Royal family.
Piers, an outspoken critic of the couple, then went on to clash with activist Dr Shola Mos-Shogbamimu about his white privilege before being schooled by Trisha Goddard about him lecturing Black people about racism.
However, some viewers felt his co-host Susanna didn’t challenge Piers’ criticism against Harry and Meghan enough.
Blogger and author Stephanie Yeboah tweeted: ‘Man, @susannareid100 I wish you would have spoken up this morning. Silence is complicit – are you on the side of Piers?’
Not agreeing with the sentiment, Susanna replied: ‘Which part of my speaking up was silence?’
Stephanie then explained: ‘When he was going back and forth with Dr. Shola. It would have been great to have at least a bit of solidarity there. He was being absolutely abhorrent.’
Susanna did chime in at times to call out her co-host, notably when he said he ‘didn’t believe’ Meghan’s revelation that she considered suicide.
‘Well that’s a pathetic reaction to someone who has expressed those thoughts,’ Susanna told Piers.
As Piers clashed with Dr Shola, Susanna weighed in to settle the situation and urged everyone to ‘calm down’.
She also reminded Piers that Buckingham Palace were investigating the bullying allegations against Meghan when he called for them to be looked into.
At one point, Susanna attempted to speak but Piers interrupted prompting her to resign: ‘Never mind me, never mind me!’
Piers replied: ‘No no, I mind you. But Chaka Khan is our superstar guest, I was going to ask her a question.’
‘I was about to ask Chaka Khan a question,’ Susanna argued.
Some of Stephanie’s followers agreed with her critique of Susanna, with one replying: ‘I do wish you would of spoke when piers shut you down though it would be great to hear more opinions without you being interrupted.’
‘Silence is complicity, you must remember this. Always,’ another agreed.
However, others reasoned that it was difficult for Susanna to share her opinion.
One stated: ‘Nobody could get a word in!’
Another said in Susanna’s defence: ‘@susannareid100 couldn’t speak up because she couldn’t get a word in edge ways with @piersmorgan taking over the show this morning.’
‘In all fairness, I think it would be hard to get a word in edgewise when Piers is in full flow. But you did a great job bringing balance to the debate,’ another replied.
Good Morning Britain airs weekdays at 6am on ITV.
