Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis were all christened in robes dyed with Yorkshire Tea, the Queen’s dressmaker has revealed.

Writing in her new book, Angela Kelly stated that Queen Elizabeth II had requested she produce a replica of the Queen Victoria christening gown in 2004.

The original robe has been worn by 62 family members since it was commissioned in 1841 – but was proving to be too small for royal babies being born now.

Ms Kelly was tasked with taking the priceless original garment to Italy to source the identical lace with the help of dressmaker Barbara Buckfield.

She said: ‘To make sure it looked authentic we dyed it in Yorkshire Tea (the strongest, as we all know).

‘We placed each piece of lace in a small bowl from the dressers’ kitchen, filled with cool water and a tea bag and left it for about five minutes, checking regularly until the colour was perfect.

‘At each stage of the process, I would show our progress to the Queen.’

Ms Kelly said it took approximately nine months to finish the robes and since then it has already been worn by countless royals.

Among them are the Cambridge’s children, Zara Tindall’s daughters Mia and Lena, and most recently, Archie Harrison, the son of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.

Ms Kelly has worked for the Queen for 25 years, and extracts of her book, The Other Side of the Coin: The Queen, the Dresser and the Wardrobe, have been published in Hello! magazine.

The royal confidante also revealed that her job includes wearing in the monarch’s new shoes and adding unique finishing touches to her outfits.

She also explained how invented a system to prevent the colour of the Queen’s Ascot hat from being leaked.

Ms Kelly states that she in the days before Ascot, she places ‘four or five previously worn hats’ of all different colours on a table in the workroom.

This is done to stop anyone who catches sight of the chosen hat from using that knowledge to place a bet at a bookmakers.

She said: ‘This is cheating and unfair on everyone else. It happened once, which was why this system was devised.’

The Other Side of the Coin: The Queen, the Dresser and the Wardrobe is available to buy from October 29.
