Gok Wan, who’s now official fashion correspondent for Channel 4 at Ascot (can’t wait for that first awks moment when he calls Balding ‘babes’), says race-day fashion is all about ‘taking classic stuff and twisting that’. Insightful, thanks Gok.
But, as Ladies’ Day approaches later this week, you may wish to take a leaf out of Gok’s book and seek inspiration from fashionistas-past on how to blend the classic with the modern, the retro with the ratchet (though not in a nasty way obvs).
To help, here’s some amazing pics showing how we wore it then and now, from the glamour of the 40s and 50s to the glitz of today.
The original and the best

The chic suits, the pastels, the brooches, the floral motif, HM keeps her signature style but opts for a more modern cut.
The young ones

The red hair, the wide-brimmed hat, the camel jacket, where have we seen this before? But, with a slightly less 80s tilt.

Like father, like son, you can’t go wrong with a classic morning suit and top hat.
Everyone needs a titfer that’s a talking point

And every Ladies’ Day needs its peacocks.

Polka dots. Classic.
The New Look

Essentially, the New Look (how amazing was the Queen in the 50s btw?), which became the old look, which is the new look again. We’re hoping the midi-skirt will be (literally) huge in the royal enclosure for 2014.
The glamour

It was acceptable in the 80s and positively encouraged now.
And the girls

Why is it whenever we see a group of girls at the races, ‘here come the girls’ starts playing in our heads?

Seriously, what is that?
