The meaning behind Prince Harry and Meghan’s coat of arms

As Prince Harry and Meghan Markle launched their new website with their Royal titles, many have wondered about the pair’s coat of arms mean.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex reclaimed their Royal titles after replacing their old Archewell website with Sussex.com.

It includes their biographies and lists their recent activities, and also the pair’s coat of arms.

The joint coat of arms features the right-side dedicated to Meghan, with the left-side dedicated to Harry.

Meghan’s side features nods to her home state of California, as well as her love of the written word and communication.

Prince Harry was gifted his very own coat of arms on his 18th birthday in 2002.

His features the Support Arms of the Sovereign in right of the United Kingdom, and the left-side of his coat of arms has been used for his and Meghan’s joint arms released in 2018.

Harry’s original arms featured a label of five points which showed three escallops (seashells) which were a nod to his mother Diana, Princess of Wales’ Spencer family coat of arms, which includes three Escallops Argent.

On his new joint coat of arms, the label has been moved to his half of the shield and the three escallops remain.

When a royal gets married, it is customary for the Queen to present the couple with their own conjugal coat of arms – a joint coat of arms that unites both family’s coats of arms – sometime after their wedding.

As Meghan is a commoner who had no coat of arms, one was created especially for her.
