This is the disturbing moment Diana, the Princess of Wales, was left without a choice but to confront a group of photographers who ‘would not leave’ her children alone.
In the first episode of Netflix’s series Harry & Meghan, Prince Harry recalled how paparazzi ‘harassed’ him and his older brother, Prince William, while at a ski resort with their parents.
Archive footage shows his late mum marching to the group, pleading with them to back off.
‘Excuse me, please stop,’ Diana can be heard saying as she covers the lens of the camera with her two hands.
‘As a parent, could I ask you to respect my children’s space? Because I brought the children out here for a holiday. And we would really appreciate the space.’
At first, a reporter can be heard answering, ‘Yes certainly, no problem at all’.
But he then asks: ‘Is it possible to just get a picture this afternoon and then we could totally leave you alone?
‘If you move over there, you are skiing and I’ll leave you alone.’
Straightaway, the princess interjects with a stern ‘no’.
‘We have had 15 cameras following us today. As a parent I want to protect my children,’ she adds.
Dressed in a green ski suit, a young Harry looked a little glum in a clip included, standing next to his older brother, Prince William, and Princesses Eugenie and Beatrice.
Footage showed the four children posing for pictures at the resort earlier that day, with photographers asking them to smile and look in their direction.
Recalling these moments, he said: ‘Paparazzi used to harass us to the point where we had to be forced into smiling and answering questions to the travelling press pack.
‘And that made me feel really uncomfortable from the get-go. The deal was that we put our skies on, and then they would leave us alone.
‘Well, some of them would. But then the other ones would just follow us around, either taking photographs or just waiting for an accident to happen and then pull out their cameras.
‘So, it was never fair and it never worked.’
Before Diana confronted the photographers, she was sitting with William and Harry in a café outside.
Concerned about her children, she can be seen looking over her shoulder at the direction of the cameras.
‘My mum did such a good job in trying to protect us. She took it upon herself to confront these people,’ Harry said.
‘I think she had the lived experience of how she was struggling, living that life,’ he added.
