Prince Harry told how he and his ‘Pa’ Charles could ‘talk for hours’ in an unearthed clip from 2017, before the pair fell out.
The Duke of Sussex interviewed his father during his stint as guest editor of Radio4’s Today show and spoke to him about fighting climate change.
The atmosphere between them is warm and appears in stark contrast to the current rift between them in the fallout of Harry’s explosive interview with Oprah Winfrey.
After introducing Charles as his ‘Pa’, Harry can be heard saying: ‘I know that the two of us can end up taking on about this for hours and hours, which we always do, but not with a microphone in front of us.’
He adds that now is a ‘real test’ for humanity, who must find a way to work together to preserve the planet and to ‘look after nature and allow it to give us those clues that you so rightly talk about’.
Charles responds: ‘Well darling boy it makes me very proud to think you understand.’
Last week Harry appeared to take a swipe, not only at his father’s parenting, but at the rest of the Royal Family, during an interview with Dax Shepard for the Armchair Expert podcast.
Comparing life at the Palace to ‘being in a zoo’ or on ‘The Truman Show’, he said: ‘There is no blame. I don’t think we should be pointing the finger or blaming anybody, but certainly when it comes to parenting, if I’ve experienced some form of pain or suffering because of the pain or suffering that perhaps my father or my parents had suffered, I’m going to make sure I break that cycle so that I don’t pass it on, basically.
‘It’s a lot of genetic pain and suffering that gets passed on anyway so we as parents should be doing the most we can to try and say “you know what, that happened to me, I’m going to make sure that doesn’t happen to you”.’
He added: ‘I know this bit about his life. I also know that’s connected to his parents. So that means that he’s treating me the way that he was treated. Which means: How can I change that for my own kids? And well, here I am. I’ve now moved my whole family to the US.’
Before the interview, Charles was already said to be angered by Harry’s bombshell interview with Oprah Winfrey in which he claimed both his father and brother William felt ‘trapped’ by the Palace and ‘could not find a way out’.
When asked about Harry’s comments about pain in the family by reporters while visiting businesses in Cardiff on Friday, Charles ignored the question.
But last week Palace insiders called his remarks on the podcast ‘unhelpful’. Speaking of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, one source told the Daily Mail: ‘They appear to be making careers of talking about their previous ones. It is not helpful.’
The insider added that ‘nothing ever appears to be their own fault’. Palace aides have reportedly demanded the couple give up their royal titles following the latest remarks.
One told the Mail on Sunday: ‘People are appalled that he could do this to the Queen when the Duke of Edinburgh is barely in his grave. To drag his grandfather into this is so shocking and disrespectful.
‘The Duke of Sussex has now spent a significant amount of time emphasising that he’s no different to anyone else and attacking the institution which he says has caused him so much pain.
‘There is a growing feeling that if you dislike the institution that much, you shouldn’t have the titles.’
