Prince Harry is not expected to wear a military uniform at Prince Philip’s funeral after he stepped down as a working royal.
The Duke of Sussex lost his role as Captain General of the Royal Marines, which he took over from his grandfather, as well as two other honorary military positions.
It means he cannot wear the official uniforms at events, and will likely arrive at Saturday’s service wearing a suit like other former servicemen.
This will be in stark contrast to his father, Prince Charles, and his brother, the Duke of Cambridge, who are expected to attend in regimental dress.
Prince Andrew is the only other senior male royal expected to arrive in a suit after he stepped back from public duties in 2019 over his relationship with billionaire paedophile Jeffrey Epstein.
Harry has not returned to the UK since stepping down as a senior royal just over a year ago.
The duke, 36, has reportedly made the journey from his home in California, although his heavily pregnant wife Meghan Markle has been advised not to fly to the UK.
It is understood Meghan made every effort to join her husband but was not given clearance to travel by her doctor.
The duke and duchess posted a tribute to Philip on the website of their foundation Archewell.
It read: ‘In loving memory of His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh 1921-2021 Thank you for your service… You will be greatly missed.’
It will also be the first time Harry has seen his family in person since his and Meghan’s bombshell interview with Oprah Winfrey – in which they accused the royal family of racism and the institution of failing to support a suicidal Meghan.
The two-hour interview was aired while Philip was in hospital after surgery on his heart.
The Queen issued a statement in response, saying ‘while some recollections may vary’, the issues would be taken ‘very seriously’, but dealt with privately as a family.
Harry told Oprah that he was cut off by his father and that ‘there’s a lot of hurt that’s happened’ between them. He told her he loved his brother William to bits, despite some ‘space’ being put between them.
