Prince Philip’s physical legacy will live on through his grandson Harry – if these side-by-side photographs of the two royals are anything to go by.
Pictures published in a 1957 edition of the Paris Match magazine show a then-36-year-old Duke of Edinburgh decked out in the Tropical Dress of the Blues and Royals.
When placed next to shots of a 34-year-old Prince Harry, wearing a similar uniform during the Anzac memorial in Australia in 2018, the similarity is striking.
The strong family lineage was first spotted by Getty’s royal photographer Chris Jackson, who shared the post on Instagram a couple years ago.
The 1957 shot of Philip, who passed away aged 99 on Friday, is believed to have been colourised from a black and white original – but it shows nearly identical facial hair, eyes, and nose to Harry.
Mr Jackson wrote of the original picture: ‘It’s these historical reference points that make photographing the Royal family so unique and remind you of the centuries of tradition that remain at their core.’
The photographer also found similarities between Harry and an image of Prince Charles in Indonesia’s Harapan Rainforest from 2008.
Harry has not returned to the UK since stepping down as a senior royal just over a year ago.
But the duke, 36, will make the journey from his home in California to the funeral in Windsor on Saturday, although his heavily pregnant wife Meghan Markle has been advised not to fly.
It is understood Meghan made every effort to join her husband but was not given clearance to travel by her doctor.
The duke and duchess posted a tribute to Philip on the website of their foundation Archewell.
It read: ‘In loving memory of His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh 1921-2021 Thank you for your service… You will be greatly missed.’
The funeral will also be the first time Harry has seen his family in person since his and Meghan’s bombshell interview with Oprah Winfrey – in which they accused the royal family of racism and the institution of failing to support a suicidal Meghan.
The two-hour interview was aired while Philip was in hospital after surgery on his heart.
The Queen issued a statement saying ‘while some recollections may vary’, the issues would be taken ‘very seriously’, but dealt with privately as a family.
Harry also told Oprah that he was cut off by his father and that ‘there’s a lot of hurt that’s happened’ between them.
He told her he loved his brother William to bits, despite some ‘space’ being put between them.
