Buckingham Palace’s hands were tied during an alleged row between Meghan Markle and Kate Middleton, it has been claimed.
During her bombshell interview with Oprah Winfrey, the Duchess of Sussex said she received no help from the palace in shutting down rumours she made Kate cry during a bridesmaid dress fitting.
She told the TV host it had been the other way round and that the Duchess of Cambridge made her cry.
In the explosive CBS special that has rocked the palace, Meghan said she was hurt by reports of a feud with Kate appearing in the press months before her wedding in May 2018.
Meghan is said to have emailed royal aides asking them to put to bed claims that she made Kate cry and asked why her ‘side of the story public image was never considered important to anyone’.
She told Ms Winfrey: ‘They were willing to lie to protect other members of the family, but they weren’t willing to tell the truth to protect me and my husband.’
But according to the Daily Mail, it’s not quite that simple, as royal aides couldn’t step in due to very different accounts on both sides.
One insider told the paper: ‘There were clearly two versions of the same event.
‘Whatever the institution said would only draw more attention to it.’

It was also reported that palace aides had denied reports of Meghan’s alleged extravagance during the £2.4million refurbishment of their Windsor home of Frogmore Cottage.
Despite struggling with accusations she had started the feud, the Duchess, 39, says she has since patched things up with Kate.
According to reports, Kate had taken flowers to Nottingham Cottage, Harry and Meghan’s home at the time, as a peace offering.
Explaining the incident to Oprah, she said: ‘A few days before the wedding, she was upset about something … about flower girl dresses, and it made me cry, and it really hurt my feelings. I don’t think it’s fair to her to get into the details of that, because she apologised.’
But she described Kate as a ‘good person’ and insisted she was not sharing that story ‘in any way to be disparaging to her’.

She added: ‘I think it’s really important for people to understand the truth. I would hope that she would have wanted that corrected.’
Omid Scobie, a friend of Meghan’s and an author of biography Finding Freedom, says no one had actually cried during the alleged argument, writing: ‘There were no tears from anyone’.
During her chat with Oprah, the Duchess claimed that she and Harry had married in secret three days before their big day in Windsor.
She said: ‘No one knows that. But we called the Archbishop, and we just said: ‘Look, this thing, this spectacle is for the world, but we want our union between us.
‘So, like, the vows that we have framed in our room are just the two of us in our back yard with the Archbishop of Canterbury.’
However this has since been disputed by lawyers and religious leaders, who point out that under English law they would have needed two witnesses and someone officiating for it to count as a legally binding wedding.
And a Lambeth Palace source told the Mail that the ceremony in the couple’s garden was actually just a ‘rehearsal’ of the wedding ceremony.
Archbishop Justin Welby is said to have blessed Harry and Meghan – but did not legally marry them.
A Special Licenses Section of the Office of the Archbishop said that a ‘special licence was issued for the marriage in St George’s’.
