Wendell Pierce has spoken out to clarify his comments about Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s interview with Oprah Winfrey, after calling it ‘insignificant’.
The actor, 57, who starred as Meghan’s character Rachel Zane’s father on Suits, had shared his thoughts on the couple’s bombshell interview, in which they claimed a member of the family had ‘expressed concerns’ about what colour their son Archie’s skin would be.
Wendell appeared on LBC to say: ‘Today 3,000 people are going to die in America from Covid… a couple of hundred people are going to die, even this hour, in the UK.’
He added: ‘It was quite insensitive and offensive that we are all complicit in this sort of palace… gossip in the midst of so much death. I think it is insignificant.’
Wendell has since taken to Twitter to explain his comments, writing: ‘I just discovered my words are being used as an attack. Well done British Press.
‘Clarity: The British monarchy is archaic in my American eyes. If slavery, colonialism and apartheid didn’t educate you that they are racist, you failed history.
‘I was fortunate to tell Meghan personally I wish her all the best. Predicting this hellacious maelstrom I also told her she would always have a friend in me. Because I had no interest in the interview doesn’t change that.’
In the interview, Meghan had also revealed that she had had suicidal thoughts during the worst times, when the intrusion into her and Harry’s life became too much and ‘didn’t want to live any more.’
Wendell reiterated that he was ‘in no way insensitive to suicide’ having experienced it in his own family, concluding: ‘As I told Meghan, I support her and wish her all the best.’
Another of Meghan’s Suits co-stars, Patrick J Adams, previously shared a statement of support for her, branding the Royal family as ‘obscene’.
