Meghan Markle revealed her ‘one regret’ after quitting the Royal Family in her bombshell interview with Oprah Winfrey.
The two-hour tell-all conversation, which aired overnight on Sunday, sent shockwaves across the world as the Duchess of Sussex revealed the pressures of royal life left her suicidal.
Although their dramatic departure – dubbed ‘Megxit’ – has caused controversy over the last year, Prince Harry said he had no regrets over how they quit.
When asked by Oprah if they had any regrets, Harry said: ‘No, I’m really proud of us.
‘We did what we had to do and now we have another little one on the way.’
Meghan added: ‘I have one. My one regret is believing them when I said I would be protected.
‘I believed that and I regret believing that, because if I had seen that wasn’t happening, I would have been able to do more.
‘But I wasn’t supposed to see it, I wasn’t supposed to know.’
Meghan wiped away tears as she told of how life as a royal drove her to thoughts of self-harm and even suicide.
The Duchess of Sussex told Oprah: ‘I was ashamed to admit it at the time, especially as how much loss [Harry’s] suffered, I just didn’t want to be alive anymore.
‘That was a very clear and real and frightening constant thought.’
Oprah then asked Meghan: ‘Were you thinking of suicidal thoughts? Were you having suicidal thoughts?’
Meghan answered: ‘Yes, this was very clear and very scary. I didn’t know who to reach out to.’

She said she asked ‘the institution’ for help, but says they refused to let her have psychiatric treatment.
She explained: ‘I thought it [suicide] would solve everything for everyone. I went to Human Resources but they said: “There is nothing we can do to help you because you are not a paid member of the institution.” Nothing was ever done.’
She further claimed Kate Middleton made her cry in the run-up to her wedding.
‘A few days before the wedding she was upset about something – it made me cry,’ Meghan added.
‘It really hurt my feelings. I thought in the context of everything that was going on in those days leading to the wedding, it didn’t make sense, not to be supportive, what with everything that was going on with my dad and everything.
‘It wasn’t a confrontation… she apologized, and I have forgiven her. What was hard to get over was something that I didn’t do, but happened to me.’
The explosive interview, which originally aired on CBS, will be shown on ITV at 9pm tonight.
