The Duke of Edinburgh sympathised with Diana, Princess of Wales, as her marriage broke down, describing how he had once been a newcomer to the royal family, a television documentary is to reveal.
Philip has been accused of writing “derogatory” letters to his daughter-in-law, but royal historian Hugh Vickers, who read some of the notes, said the royal showed “enormous concern” and talked about his time when he first joined the Queen’s family.
An advisor to the senior royal also told the two-part documentary that the Duke did not speak out about the allegations surrounding the letters until a few years ago as the matter was a “private” one.
During the final part of the documentary, screened on Tuesday night, the Duke defends his grandson Prince Harry over allegations he was involved in the shooting of two rare birds of prey.
