Caroline Flack quit as the host of Winter Love Island on Tuesday following her arrest for assault.

The TV presenter, 40, was arrested on Friday 13 December and later charged with assault by beating after an alleged row with her boyfriend Lewis Burton, 27, at her Islington home in North London on Thursday 12 December.

Caroline has also been dropped by clothing retailer River Island since her arrest, and she’s due to appear in court over the charge on 23 December.

Caroline said in a statement: ‘Love Island has been my world for the last five years, it’s the best show on telly. In order to not detract attention from the upcoming series I feel the best thing I can do is to stand down for series six.

‘I want to wish the incredible team working on the show a fantastic series in Cape Town.’

As we wait to see what’s next for her, here’s a closer look at Caroline Flack’s relationship history.

Prince Harry

Caroline met Prince Harry (who had baby Archie with wife Meghan Markle in May) in 2009 through a mutual friend called Natalie Pinkham.

In her 2015 book, Storm In A C Cup, Caroline said of the romance: ‘I knew [Natalie] was friends with Prince Harry, and I’d never met him, so I thought, “Oh that’s quite exciting”, and for a moment I perked up.

‘So I was just sitting there and he arrived with a few others in tow and we all spent the evening chatting and laughing.’

In the end, Caroline’s ‘friendship’ with the prince meant she felt she was labelled his ‘bit of rough’. She explained: ‘To meet a prince is so unlikely it would be weird not to acknowledge it.

‘However, once the story got out, that was it. We had to stop seeing each other. I was no longer Caroline Flack, TV presenter, I was Caroline Flack, Prince Harry’s bit of rough.’

Harry Styles

Two years after she was introduced to Prince Harry, Caroline met young Harry Styles – member of a little old band called One Direction who rose to fame as contestants on The X Factor in 2010.

Harry was just 17 at the time while Caroline, presenter of The Xtra Factor, was 31.

In her autobiography, she wrote: ‘I already knew that he had a crush on me, he’d made it pretty obvious. He’d said it in magazines and he’d said it to friends.

‘It was flattering and I found it amusing. He was a kind of cheeky man/boy with a captivating smile who got what he wanted.’

She added: ‘I’ve never felt I was much older than Harry anyway. I still feel 18 and probably act that way half the time — all those years in kids’ telly probably didn’t help.

‘Although it was just a bit of fun we decided it was best to keep it to ourselves, as we were both working for Simon (Cowell).

‘We were both single, we got on well and we had a laugh.’

Harry and Caroline split in early 2012 after, as Caroline wrote: ‘It began to go wrong when he was pictured coming out of my house one morning.

‘And once that was out, it was open season. After that anyone could say anything. In the street people started shouting at me “paedophile” and “pervert”.’

Sam Smith’s (another X Factor alum) manager Jack Street was with Caroline for 18 months between 2013 and 2014.

They split after it was rumoured he had cheated on her with Glee actress Dianna Agron.

Then in 2015, Caroline was spotted with Jack – who is eight years her junior – at Glastonbury, which sparked rumours of a reunion which proved to be true as they did get back together for a spell.

But later that year she slammed him for ‘ruining the best day of her life’ by being pictured with another woman on Instagram the day she was starting her job hosting The X Factor with Olly Murs.

She wrote in a comment next to the picture: ‘When someone who knows you more than anyone ruins the biggest day of your life.’

Caroline and Andrew, 29 were together from the start of 2018 until close to the end of that year.

The pair shared a turbulent relationship which saw them get engaged and split several times before finally calling it quits in November 2018.

Following his ex-fiance’s arrest, Andrew tweeted: ‘Sad that I’m not more surprised by the news.’

He has also since posted photos of an NDA preventing him from talking about a particular relationship.

While personal details in the document have been redacted, Andrew captioned the post with the hashtag #abusehasnogender.

Last month, Andrew had his ‘CF’ tattoo covered up to mark the one-year anniversary of their split and suggested that breaking up with Caroline ‘saved [his] life’.

In an Instagram story post, the former Celebrity Big Brother star said: ‘It’s exactly a year tomorrow (29/11/18) since I left a very toxic relationship and got away.

‘Leaving probably saved my life.’

Lewis Burton

Model and tennis player Lewis, 27, became Caroline’s Instagram official boyfriend back in August of this year.

After her arrest, Lewis came out in support of her, saying he was ‘tired of the lies and abuse’ aimed at Caroline.

He wrote in his Instagram stories: ‘I’m tired of the lies and abuse aimed at my girlfriend. This is not a witch hunt this is someone’s life.’

Caroline also mentioned her beau in her statement announcing that she was quitting Love Island.

She said: ‘And on a really personal level. I have never experienced such kindness and love in my whole life. Not just from friends and family who are always the greatest.

‘But also from total strangers who send messages to me offering to help and understanding…

‘Please know that I see them… And my boyfriend Lewis… I love you x.’

Can a person be found guilty of assault if the victim doesn't press charges?

Despite Caroline Flack being charged for assault by beating, it's been claimed that Lewis Burton does not want to press charges against her.

Speaking on his Instagram Stories he said: ‘I’m tired of the lies and abuse aimed at my girlfriend. This is not a witch hunt this is someone’s life.’

Lewis, who broke his silence over the weekend with a loved-up Instagram post of him and the presenter, added: ‘Caroline is the most lovely girl. Loyal and kind. She doesn’t deserve any of this.'

All of which prompts the question - can someone still be found guilty of assault if the victim doesn't want to press charges against them?

Well, the decision whether or not to drop charges actually rests with the police or the Crown Prosecution Service rather than with the victim.

Although they could be influenced by the victim not wanting to take the case forwards, they may do so anyway if they think it's in the public interest.

The police or the CPS can drop charges if there isn't enough credible evidence to secure a conviction, or if a witness withdraws their statement.

However if a witness admits they have been lying then that in itself could land them in trouble for perverting the course of justice - or if they simply withdraw their support the police might examine their reasons for doing so.

Joshua Kern, barrister at 9 Bedford Row, told Metro.co.uk: 'The answer is yes. Ultimately, like in any case, it will be down to the jury or magistrates to decide whether the prosecution have made them sure of guilt. If, for example, the incident is captured on CCTV, even if the complainant doesn't give an account there may be sufficient evidence to sustain a conviction. Similarly if a defendant confesses.

'But, clearly, if the complainant doesn't support the prosecution, and in the absence of other evidence which is capable of making a jury or a magistrate sure of guilt, that would jeopardise the prospects of conviction which may in turn impact on whether the CPS decides to proceed.

'Equally, if the complainant isn't supporting a prosecution there may be public interest reasons for the prosecution not to proceed. On the other hand, the CPS might consider that despite the lack of support from the complainant it is nevertheless in the public interest to pursue the prosecution if there is a reasonable prospect of conviction.'
