Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have taken their newborn son Archie on his first family holiday – by private jet.
The eco-friendly royals stayed in a luxury private villa in Ibiza to mark Meghan’s 38th birthday away from prying eyes.
The family are believed to have stayed for six days and travelled with a normal security team, which would have included two or three Met Police officers.
The secret holiday comes just days after Prince Harry attended Camp Google in Sicily, where he gave a speech about climate change to a group of celebrities.
Their decision to use a private jet is likely to raise eyebrows as the journey would have emitted six times more carbon dioxide than a scheduled flight to the Spanish island.
According to reports in several local newspapers, Prince Harry and Meghan travelled to the Balearic Islands on August 6.
Their villa is believed to have been on the southern side of the island and they evaded the eyes of other tourists and the paparazzi.
A source told Majorca Daily Bulletin: ‘No images have emerged of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex and Archie, who stayed at a villa away from the cameras.
‘They travelled with security personnel and it is reported that local security forces were not needed.’
By taking a private jet, the royal couple were able to fly in and out of Ibiza without being noticed.
The cost of a plane is likely to have cost up to £40,000 return.
It is unclear whether it was taxpayers or the royals themselves who paid for the trip as Buckingham Palace has declined to comment.
Their choice of transport flies in the face of their public statements on green issues.
A trip there and back would have given out about 12.5 tons of carbon dioxide compared to just under 2 on a commercial flight.
Last month, Prince Harry told conservation expert Dr Jane Goodall that he and Meghan planned to limit the size of their family for environmental reasons.
News of the trip broke on the day climate change activist Greta Thunberg set sail from England to New York because she refuses to travel by plane.
Meghan visited Ibiza with a group of friends in 2016 – around the same time she started dating the sixth in line to the throne.
The couple are due on an official royal tour of Africa next month.
Prince Harry came under fire for attending Camp Google in Sicily on July 31 after the tech-giant flew him out to the summit.
There he gave an impassioned speech about the environment and humanitarianism to a group of celebrities, many of whom stayed on luxury yachts after reportedly jetting in on 114 private planes.
Guests were rumoured to include Leonardo DiCaprio, Naomi Campbell, Stella McCartney and Harry Styles.
Meghan’s birthday was just a few days later and it is unclear whether Prince Harry flew to Ibiza straight from Italy or the family went together from their home at Frogmore Cottage on the Windsor estate.
