Prince Harry was all smiles as he spoke of his delight following the birth of his first son.
The Duke of Sussex spoke to reporters as Meghan Markle rested inside Windsor Castle with the new royal baby.
He said: ‘I’m very excited to announce that Meghan and myself had a baby boy earlier this morning. A very healthy baby boy.
‘Mother and baby are doing incredibly well.
‘It’s been the most amazing experience I could have ever possibly imagined.
‘How any woman does what they do is beyond comprehension.
‘We’re both absolutely thrilled and so grateful for all the love and support out there. It’s been amazing.’
He then admitted he hasn’t quite decided on his son’s name yet.
He added: ‘We’re still thinking about names, the baby’s a little bit overdue so we’ve had some time to think about it.
‘That’s the next bit, but for us we’ll see you in two days so everyone can see the baby.’
Meghan’s last official function was on Commonwealth Day on March 18 and she has only been spotted a couple of times since, but has been working ‘behind the scenes’ and keeping private appointments.
The exact due date was not made public, but it had been expected that she would give birth in late April or early May – the latest clue being that Prince Charles, the royal baby’s granddad, scheduled a foreign visit on May 7.
Prince Harry is expected to take the two weeks of paternity leave he is entitled to ‘because it is a modern dad thing’.
Buckingham Palace said in a statement today: ‘The Duchess went into labour in the early hours of this morning.
‘The Duke of Sussex was by Her Royal Highnesses’ side. An announcement will be made soon.’
The new baby boy will be the Queen’s eighth great-grandchild and Prince Charles’s fourth grandchild.
Sources have said the couple will remain tight-lipped, giving royal fans a tantalising wait for the first glimpse of the new royal baby.
