You might have already heard by now – but Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are expecting their first child together.
The happy couple announced their exciting news to the world via a statement from Kensington Palace.
It read: ‘Their Royal Highnesses The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are very pleased to announce that The Duchess of Sussex is expecting a baby in the Spring of 2019.
‘Their Royal Highnesses have appreciated all of the support they have received from people around the world since their wedding in May and are delighted to be able to share this happy news with the public.’
Of course it’s expected for us Joe Public to be the last to know – but when did the royal family find out?
It would appear that Harry and Meghan’s broke the happy news to their immediate family some time before Princess Eugenie’s wedding on Friday.
Traditionally, the Queen and Prince Philip are told about royal pregnancies via a courier or over the phone.
Meghan’s mother, Doria Ragland, was also able to share the couple’s joy before their announcement today.
Kensington Palace said in a statement: ‘The Queen, Duke of Edinburgh, Prince of Wales, Duchess of Cornwall and Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are delighted for the couple and were able to congratulate them on Friday at the wedding in person.’
‘Ms Doria Ragland is very happy about the lovely news and she looks forward to welcoming her first grandchild.’
The Duchess of Sussex sent social media into overdrive on Friday when she arrived at the wedding of Eugenie and Jack Brooksbank in a long loose-fitting navy coat.
Teamed with a Givenchy dress, Noel Stewart hat and Pippa Small Jewellery, the outfit sparked a frenzy of speculation that the former Suits actress might be pregnant.
Meghan is said to be in good health and has had a 12-week scan.
The new addition to the family will be seventh in line to the throne, one behind Harry’s current standing in sixth.
But the baby will not have the title prince or princess, unless the Queen steps in and decides to change the rules.
Harry and Meghan’s first born, as a great-grandchild of the sovereign, is too far down the line of succession to be an HRH.
