Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have announced they are expecting their first child one day into their first royal tour together in Australia.
Five months after the couple married at Windsor Castle, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex said they were delighted to share the happy news.
The new royal baby baby will become seventh in line to the throne – could we see our first ever dual citizen join the line of succession?
What will the royal baby’s citizenship be?
Harry and Meghan could apply for their baby to have dual UK and US citizenship.
Meghan has announced her plans to become a British citizen but it is not yet known whether she will hold dual nationality.
At the moment, she is still a US citizen.
According to the American Embassy in the UK, a child born outside of the US and in wedlock to a US citizen parent and a non US citizen parent, may acquire US citizenship at birth if the US parent lived inAmerica for five years.
Two of the years spent living in the US must be after the age of 14.
The baby will be born in Spring 2019 and the Duke and Duchess of Sussex are said to be ‘very pleased’, according to Kensington Palace.
Meghan is said to be in good health and has had a 12-week scan. The baby will be seventh in line to the throne.
The palace said in a statement: ‘Their Royal Highnesses The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are very pleased to announce that The Duchess of Sussex is expecting a baby in the Spring of 2019.
‘Their Royal Highnesses have appreciated all of the support they have received from people around the world since their wedding in May and are delighted to be able to share this happy news with the public.’
Meghan’s mum Doria Ragland is ‘very happy about this lovely news’ and ‘looks forward to welcoming her first grandchild’.
The Queen, the Duke of Edinburgh, the Prince of Wales, the Duchess of Cornwall and Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are said to be ‘delighted’ for the couple.
